Many people will live their whole lives without once seeking a 2nd medical opinion, but the same person would probably do so if their trusty mechanic told them “you need a new engine which will cost over $4,000”. Let’s remember that our health is precious and nobody is concerned more about your health than you are. Medicare and insurance carriers cover most examples of Second Opinions and if that is a concern, then just inquire with them (some insurance carriers will require them).

What types of situation warrants a 2nd opinion?

1. Serious and Life threatening diseases and conditions
2. Experimental procedure or drug trials
3. A situation that just does not feel right to you.

How to go about getting a 2nd opinion

1. Ask friends, call a different hospital and ask for references, do a little research on the Internet. Feel comfortable
2. You can ask your current physician about names but I would leave that as a last resort (buddies aren’t always as objective as we would like).
3. In certain situations Medicare will even pay for a 3rd opinion.
4. You will need to ask your current physician’s staff for a copy of your medical records and bring those to your appointment with the new physician.

Action Step: I am afraid if I ask for my records for a 2nd opinion, I will upset my current physician. To be blunt, if the physician would be offended then you are seeing the wrong person.

Golden Nugget: If I like the 2nd Physician better can I switch – The American Medical Association (AMA) states that yes you can switch and with a clear conscious. Your health should be a big deal to you and you need to feel comfortable about your physician when you are facing illness and surgery.
